The only cat my dog ever knew...
“I have only ever seen one cat up close, and even then it was through a glass storm door. That cat was Miss Kitty, who showed up on our doorstep one Thanksgiving morning. This was long before my Mom was involved with rescue at all and well before we adopted LoJack. It was just me and Nikki back then. Mom went out for the paper and found Miss Kitty, a white and orange tabby sitting on our steps (and our paper). In that moment, Mom would begin to learn that life for animals, even in this prosperous suburban community, was anything but simple.”

This is how Mr. Murphy became part of our family. He was about to be checked in at the humane society. A friend called me and said “there’s something special about this cat. He’s too lovable to end up at the shelter.” The woman checking him in loaded him in the car and brought him to our house. That was 4 years ago.
I think the woman’s son was heartless and cruel to turn his mother’s feline companion out into the street like that. He could have gotten into trouble being out in the street; could have ran into a mean dog or gotten hit by a car. I usually adopt from the shelters and the last cat lived for 17 years, and was a favorite of everyone who met him because he was such a character. When I get my apartment in order, I will visit the shelters and find another companion of the feline persuasion.
Cynthia—GREAT photo of Mr Murphy! How’d you come up with that name? Kyah—thank you for adopting!
All my fur-babies have been adopted.
It is sad that so many animals experience abuse. Great story for bringing awareness to this situation.

Nice story! I love cats and dogs. I tamed a cat once. She was hissing and batting at me with her claws. I kept feeding her each day. Eventually, she let me pick her up and take her inside. She would follow me around, come running if she saw me anywhere in the house or outside. Beautiful cat she was.
It breaks my heart when some people just toss a pet like it is old baggage..they have cold hearts and will never know the warmth a sweet kitty or precious pup can bring...thanks for sharing, Melissa!
